Leadership CCC 'Character, Competence, Courage' - Thinking Traps

brencronin

When faced with a challenging situation, pause and ask yourself:

  • Is my perception of this situation accurate?

  • Is this way of thinking serving my well-being and goals?

  • Could there be a more constructive or empowering perspective?

Beware of the 7 thinking traps that can cloud your judgment and weigh you down:

  1. Personalizing – Shouldering all the blame, believing everything rests solely on you.

  2. Externalizing – Avoiding responsibility by placing all the blame on others.

  3. Magnifying or Minimizing – Blowing the negatives out of proportion while downplaying the positives—or the reverse.

  4. Overgeneralizing – Drawing sweeping conclusions about yourself or others without sufficient evidence.

  5. Mind Reading – Assuming you know what someone else thinks—or expecting them to read your mind.

  6. Emotional Reasoning – Taking your feelings as factual proof of reality.

  7. Catastrophizing – Imagining the worst-case scenario and spiraling into exaggerated fears about the future.

By recognizing these mental traps, you empower yourself to see situations with clarity, make balanced decisions, and navigate life with resilience and wisdom.
